Value for Used Rental Equipment Increases 1.6 Percent in December

December Orderly Liquidation Values (OLV) index values for used equipment across the 10 major rental category indices tracked by Rouse Asset Services increased 1.6 percent from November values. For the six months ending Dec. 31, 2009, average index values increased 4.7 percent. Eight of the top 10 categories recorded one-month index increases with AWP - Articulating Booms and AWP-Telescopic Booms recording 0 percent change from November index values. For the six-month period, seven categories recorded increases ranging from 2.1 percent to 12.4 percent. AWPs recorded six-month value index decreases with AWP- Articulating Booms down (2.7 %) AWP-Telescopic Booms down (1.2 %), and AWP-Scissor Lifts down (0.4%) from June 30, 2009 to Dec. 30, 2009.

Total Q4 OEC Sold Down 40 Percent from 2008 TO 2009
For the three months ending Dec. 31, 2009, the major North American rental companies sold (40%) less construction equipment (as measured by original equipment cost), than in the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2008. Equipment sold at auction in Q4 ‘09 represented 33 percent of total sales, versus 47 percent of total Q4 ’08 sales. The percentage of OEC sold at auction (relative to total OEC sold) by the major rental companies in Q4 ’09 also represented a significant reduction from the trend for the prior nine months ended Sept. 30, 2009. For Q1-Q3 ‘09, auction sales were 43 percent of sales volume. For Q1-Q3 2008, the amount of equipment (OEC) sold at auction represented 22 percent of total equipment sales.
