U.S. Chamber Applauds Canada's Entry into Trans-Pacific Partnership Negotiations

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued the following statement welcoming the recent announcement that Canada has been invited to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations:

“The U.S. Chamber applauds the news that the nine countries taking part in the TPP talks will be joined by Canada and Mexico, America’s closest neighbors and largest export markets. Companies and workers in our three countries literally make things together, with supply chains that cross our borders and make North America more competitive on the global stage. As a result, negotiating the TPP together is an excellent strategic decision for North America.

"Canada has taken important steps to prove its readiness to join the high-standard TPP agreement. Last night, Canada moved in the right direction with the approval of long pending copyright legislation by the lower house of Parliament. In fact, while issues still remain regarding Canadian policies on intellectual property and supply management—which we believe the TPP negotiations should address—the United States has much to learn from Canada’s tax policies, permit streamlining, and other initiatives.

“The TPP has the potential to set the table for the next round of global economic growth. This deal could not come at a more important time for the American economy.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
