House Votes to Repeal Affordable Care Act

On July 11, the House of Representatives approved legislation (H.R. 6079) to fully repeal President Obama’s health care law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), 244-185.

The vote fell largely along party lines with five Democrats joining a united Republican caucus endorsing the measure’s passage.  The latest action to repeal the health care law was a repeat of the vote conducted by the House early last year. The vote was largely political and symbolic.  H.R. 6079 stands no chance of passage in the Senate, but the vote forced vulnerable House Democrats into taking a position on the controversial law.

The vote serves as an important reminder that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the constitutionality of the ACA does not end the debate on healthcare reform. Along with the entire business community, AED supports efforts for real, market-based alternatives to the ACA that cut costs and restore certainty to the marketplace. AED stands ready to work with the Congress and the administration toward achieving these ends.
